August was a very busy month for my family. My son went back to school in early August. Back to school time is always an expensive time of year. I still managed to save a lot in August.
1. I bought school supplies when they were a great deal. I found some good drug store deals, plus the office supply stores had some free or cheap items each week. I also used Amazon for a few items and paid 1/3 of the price that they were at Staples.
2. My son reused some school supplies from last year. We placed all of the leftover school supplies in a drawer last May. Then we could reuse them this fall. Items like rulers, protractors, and colored pencils can be used again from year to year. My son took his old backpack to school this fall. We are going on year five with this backpack.
3. I have been making a crockpot breakfast once a week. They are all ready and warm when we wake up in the morning. It saves us the temptation of using the drive-thru in the morning.
4. I bought a couple pounds of bacon on sale in August. Since I knew I wouldn’t use it all before the expiration date I froze it . It was so easy and I can just grab a small amount when I need it. I did the same thing with some green onions.
5. My son has Cross Country practice every day after school. It’s only a 10 minute trip to his school, but I am carpooling with a group from our neighborhood. I only have to make the trip to his school twice a week. It not only saves money on gas, but also it saves me time each day.
6. I used my favorite mixture for getting out armpit stains on two of my husbands shirts. It makes such a difference. Now we don’t need to buy him new shirts.
7. I made these great sandwiches the morning of my son’s cross country meet. I knew it would be a late night and I wouldn’t feel like cooking later. I avoided the carryout trap by making dinner ahead of time. If you haven’t tried the sandwiches yet I highly recommend them. They are fantastic!
What did you do to save money in August?
